Best Gyms in Leeds
Leeds has a dense gym market that serves everyone from the daily commuter squeezing in a 6am session to the serious athlete who needs proper equipment and space to use it. Here’s the honest breakdown.
PureGym Leeds
PureGym operates multiple sites across Leeds – city centre, Leeds South, Merrion Centre and several outer locations. For price and accessibility they’re hard to fault: no contract, twenty-four hour access at most sites, decent equipment and good group class programmes. The city centre sites get busy during the 6–8pm peak but the 24-hour access means you can work around it. The Leeds network is one of the better-run regional clusters in the PureGym estate.
David Lloyd Horsforth
The premium end of the Leeds gym market. David Lloyd Horsforth offers extensive facilities – large gym floor, pool, tennis courts, spa, dedicated cycling and yoga studios – and the Horsforth location makes it accessible from the northwest Leeds suburbs and beyond. Monthly membership is significantly higher than budget gyms but the facilities justify it if you’ll use the full offering.
Anytime Fitness
Several Anytime Fitness locations across Leeds – 24-hour access, no-frills but well-maintained. A step above PureGym for spaciousness at some sites, though the equipment variety is more limited than the premium options.
Leeds Beckett University Sport
Leeds Beckett’s Carnegie Sport facility on Headingley Campus is open to the public via membership and is excellent value – particularly for swimming and court sports. The facility was upgraded for the students but the public membership option makes it one of the better-value options in the city.
Nuffield Health Leeds
Nuffield Health operates a city centre club with pool, gym and wellbeing services. More expensive than the budget chains but considerably better equipped and staffed. The pool is a significant differentiator in a city where proper swimming facilities with gym attached are less common than they should be.
The Verdict
For pure value: PureGym. For facilities and community: David Lloyd. For something in between: Nuffield or Leeds Beckett. The independent gym scene in Leeds – several CrossFit boxes and specialist strength gyms in the inner suburbs – is worth exploring if you have specific training needs.
