Best Student Areas in Leeds: Where to Live

Where you live as a student in Leeds shapes the entire experience. The areas are distinct enough – in character, in commute time, in price, in social atmosphere – that the decision is worth researching properly rather than defaulting to where your halls were in first year.

Headingley

The default answer for Leeds students, and for good reason. Otley Road is the social spine – pubs, takeaways, a cinema, independent shops – and the bus into the city centre runs regularly enough that the twenty-minute journey is not a material problem. Cheaper than Hyde Park for comparable houses, slightly further out. The cricket and rugby grounds add a genuine sporting-events calendar that shapes the area’s rhythms in a way unique to Leeds.

Hyde Park

Closer to the university, which is the main argument. Hyde Park Corner has what you need within a ten-minute walk, the park itself is a significant green asset, and the concentration of students is higher here than anywhere else in the city. It is not as cheap as it used to be. The housing quality varies enormously by street – research specific roads rather than trusting the area name.

Burley

The cheaper end of the student market, positioned between Hyde Park and Kirkstall. Less infrastructure than either Headingley or Hyde Park but lower rents and good bus connections into the city. Better for students who spend most of their time in the city centre or on campus than for people who want a strong local community outside of student culture.

Chapel Allerton

Not traditionally a student area – it skews young professional – but an increasing number of final-year and postgraduate students are moving here for the better housing stock, the independent cafe and bar scene, and the slight remove from the undergraduate intensity of Headingley. Higher rents, better quality of life for the right person.

Woodhouse and Little Woodhouse

The areas immediately adjacent to the University of Leeds campus. Convenient to the point of being able to walk to lectures in ten minutes. The downside is that the local amenities are limited and the area does not have the same independent scene as Headingley or Chapel Allerton.

First years in halls, second years in Hyde Park, third years wherever the mood takes them – this is the rough arc of a Leeds student housing career and it maps onto the areas reasonably well.
