Leeds

Harvey Nichols opened its first store outside London in Leeds in 1996. The decision was about more than retail - it announced that Leeds had become a city where serious investment in quality was viable. The Briggate store is still there.

The Thackray Medical Museum in Harehills is one of the most affecting museums in the north of England. The story it tells - of Victorian Leeds, its slums, and the medical responses to poverty - is not comfortable but it is essential.

Kirkstall Abbey was founded in 1152 by Cistercian monks from Barnoldswick. It was dissolved in 1539 and has been a ruin ever since. Eight hundred years of history beside the River Aire, and one of the best-preserved medieval abbeys in England.

Henry Moore was born in Castleford in 1898 and trained at Leeds College of Art before going to London. His connection to Yorkshire never left him. The Henry Moore Institute in Leeds and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield are both part of his legacy.

Joshua Tetley set up his brewery on Salem Place in Holbeck in 1822. For nearly 190 years Tetley's bitter was part of what Leeds was. The closure in 2011 was the end of something. The arts centre that followed is the beginning of something else.

Don Revie's Leeds United were the most talented and the most controversial club in England in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The "dirty Leeds" reputation was partly deserved and partly not. The 1975 European Cup Final was the moment it all ended.

Between 1975 and 1980, Peter Sutcliffe murdered 13 women across Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. The investigation was a systematic failure. The victims, many of them from Chapeltown in Leeds, deserved better from the police and from history.

While Manchester had the Hacienda, Leeds had the Warehouse - and a rave culture that was distinctly its own. The story of Leeds's late 1980s and early 1990s club scene is underwritten, but it was real and it mattered.

The Caribbean community that settled in Chapeltown from the late 1940s built churches, businesses, carnivals, and a neighbourhood that has been through crisis and come through it. This is the Chapeltown story.
