Summer in Leeds: Parks, Festivals and What to Do

Leeds in summer is the city at its most expansive. The green space infrastructure – Roundhay Park alone covers 700 acres – gives the city a breathing room that its compact urban core does not immediately suggest, and the outdoor events programme across July and August makes it one of the better northern cities to be in when the weather cooperates.

Roundhay Park Events

The park hosts a series of large outdoor concerts and events across the summer that have historically included some of the largest touring acts available. The site capacity allows for events that cannot happen in the city’s venues, and the park setting improves most live music by giving the sound room to travel. Keep an eye on the outdoor event announcements from around February – the best acts sell out within hours of the public sale.

Leeds West Indian Carnival

The oldest Caribbean carnival in Europe, running in Chapeltown every August Bank Holiday weekend. The parade route through Chapeltown and the subsequent celebration in Potternewton Park is genuinely significant – this is a 60-year-old community institution with cultural weight that makes it different from a corporate-sponsored festival. Attend as a participant in something that belongs to the city rather than as a spectator of something put on for you.

Leeds Pride

The annual Pride celebration runs in August and covers the Canal Quarter and city centre with a parade and a multi-stage festival in Millennium Square. Leeds Pride has grown significantly in the past decade – the Saturday parade is now one of the larger Pride events outside London, Birmingham and Manchester.

Canal Side Summer

Granary Wharf and the Dock area come into their own in summer. The outdoor seating at the waterside bars, the towpath cycling and walking traffic, the Aire Bar terrace overlooking the canal – this is the version of Leeds that the city marketing does not oversell but should.

Beer Gardens

The Belgrave rooftop, the North Bar terrace, and the Skyrack garden in Headingley are the three best summer outdoor drinking spots in the city. On a warm Leeds evening – and there are enough of them across July and August to plan around – these are as good as anywhere in the North of England.
