Student Cheap Eats in Leeds
Eating well on a student budget in Leeds is genuinely achievable. The city has a combination of a world-class market, a strong independent street food scene, and a critical mass of students that keeps prices competitive in the areas where they matter.
Kirkgate Market
The non-negotiable first entry. A full breakfast at the market cafe for under four pounds. Fresh fruit and vegetables at market prices. Street food traders who are making genuinely excellent food at Kirkgate prices because the rent structure allows it. Going to the market once a week as a student in Leeds is a financial and culinary habit worth forming immediately.
Bundobust
Small plates from three pounds, craft beer that is worth the slight price premium over a pint of Carlsberg, and an atmosphere that makes it fine to come on your own with a book. The student card does not get you a discount but the prices are already student-friendly enough that it does not matter.
Humpit
Trinity Street hummus bar. Filling, cheap, fast. The falafel wrap for under five pounds is one of the best-value lunches in the city centre.
Belgrave Music Hall
The rooftop kitchen does burgers and loaded fries at prices that work for a student budget, particularly during the week. The atmosphere is better than the price suggests and combining it with a cheap pint of Northern Monk on the rooftop terrace in summer is a Leeds student rite of passage.
Hyde Park and Headingley Takeaways
The concentration of takeaways on Otley Road and around Hyde Park Corner offers a competitive market that benefits students in both areas. The pizza, curry and kebab options in Headingley are better than their surroundings suggest – competition keeps quality up and prices down.
Tesco on Merrion Street (4-6pm)
The yellow sticker hour. This is not glamorous information but it is honest: the Merrion Street Tesco’s evening reductions are predictable enough to plan around and significant enough to materially alter a weekly food budget. City centre students know this already.
Eating cheaply in Leeds is a skill that improves quickly. The market, Bundobust and the Headingley takeaway corridor cover most situations between them.
