Best Student Bars in Leeds

Leeds student bar culture is defined less by the union bars – both universities have functional but unremarkable ones – and more by the network of independent and music-venue bars that have shaped the city’s nightlife for decades.

The Faversham

The Springfield Mount bar is one of the most reliable all-round venues in the city – food, drink, live music and DJ nights in a Victorian building that has been through enough refurbishments to feel current without losing its character. The garden is excellent in summer. It functions as a student bar without having the atmosphere of one, which is partly why it maintains a broad enough appeal to stay busy year-round.

Brudenell Social Club

The Queens Road venue is the most important live music venue in Leeds and, for students living in Hyde Park and Headingley, the local. Technically a members club but non-members can usually get in for ticketed events without issue. The bar prices are among the cheapest of any quality venue in the city, the programming is exceptional, and the informal atmosphere makes it the kind of place you keep going back to. An Arlo Parks or CMAT show here beats a Stylus show on any day of the week.

Library Bar (LMU)

The Leeds Metropolitan bar near the Headingley campus is the obvious LMU option for an affordable pint close to the lecture rooms. It does what a student union bar should do without embarrassing itself.

The Adelphi

The Hunslet Road pub is the kind of proper Victorian boozer that students discover in their second year and then protect zealously. Good real ale, cheap enough to be a Tuesday option, and a music programme that brings in local bands and touring acts without inflating the prices.

Nation of Shopkeepers

The Cookridge Street bar has a student following built on good craft beer, a food menu that works as a full meal or snacks, and a layout that suits groups. More expensive than The Adelphi but positioned in the city centre for post-lecture or pre-night-out visits.

The difference between good Leeds student bars and the rest is whether the venue has an independent identity beyond its student audience. The Faversham and Brudenell have that identity – they are worth going to even without the student context.
