Student Nightlife in Leeds: The Complete Guide

Leeds is not modest about its nightlife, and for good reason. The city has a club and bar infrastructure that rivals anywhere in England outside London, and for students it represents one of the main reasons Leeds keeps appearing near the top of best-student-cities lists.

Call Lane

The city centre strip is the backbone of Leeds student nightlife – a mix of bars, clubs and late-night venues that runs from the bottom of Briggate through to the Calls and Granary Wharf. The pre-drinking circuit here is genuinely good before you commit to a club. Nation of Shopkeepers, Belgrave, and the smaller bars on the Lane itself cover the first part of the evening well.

Wire

The Call Lane club is one of the best small venues in England for electronic music. The sound system is legendary among DJs and the crowd is a healthy mix of students and music-focused regulars who know what they came for. Wire does not operate every night – check listings carefully and book ahead for anything with a name on the flyer.

Mint Club

The Harrison Street club is the city’s long-standing house and techno institution. It has been doing this since the 1990s and continues to do it better than most of the venues that have opened since. The back room is where you want to be – better sound, better crowd density, better everything.

Canal Mills

The Kirkstall Road venue is the option for when you want the full warehouse experience – large space, serious bookings, the kind of event nights that justify the slightly further distance from the city centre. Fabric-level production values at Leeds prices. Take an Uber there and back.

Sheaf Street

The Sheaf Street complex near the train station has become one of the city’s most interesting nightlife anchors for students – the format of multiple spaces with different music offerings in the same building means a night here can cover a lot of ground without going anywhere.

The Leeds student night out works best if you have a plan: dinner somewhere cheap and good (Belgrave or Bundobust), a few rounds on Call Lane, then into the club of choice. The mistake is spending too long in the wrong place before committing to a destination.
