Day Trips from Leeds

Leeds is brilliantly positioned for Yorkshire day trips. Within two hours by public transport you can reach a medieval city, a Viking-era coastal town, a Georgian spa resort, some of the finest national park scenery in England and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not many cities offer this range. Here are the best options.

York – 25 Minutes by Train

The obvious one, and genuinely brilliant. York by train from Leeds takes around twenty-five minutes on the direct service. The city is astonishing – the Minster, the Shambles, the Roman walls, the Viking museum at JORVIK, the National Railway Museum (free, genuinely world-class). A full day barely scratches it. Go on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds if you can.

Harrogate – 30 Minutes by Train

The spa town that thinks it’s in the home counties and has done rather well out of the misunderstanding. Harrogate is lovely – the valley gardens, Betty’s Tea Rooms (queue expected, worth it), the independent shops on Parliament Street, the Royal Pump Room museum. An ideal half-day or full day depending on pace.

Skipton and the Dales

Skipton is a market town at the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales – around an hour by train. The castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in the north, the market is excellent on market days, and the town makes an ideal base for walking into the Dales. Malham Cove and Gordale Scar are accessible from Skipton with some effort.

Whitby – About 1 Hour 30 by Bus or Train

The North Yorkshire coast town that gave Dracula his Yorkshire holiday home. The abbey ruins on the clifftop, the harbour, the 199 steps, the fish and chips – all worth the journey. Direct buses from Leeds run through the moors. Dramatic in any season but particularly atmospheric in autumn and winter.

Saltaire World Heritage Site – 20 Minutes by Train

Titus Salt’s Victorian model village, built around Salts Mill on the River Aire, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary industrial heritage sites in England. The David Hockney gallery inside the mill is world-class and free to enter. An easy half-day from Leeds.

Knaresborough

The town over the river from Harrogate – smaller, quieter and with its own considerable charms: the castle, the viaduct, the market square, Mother Shipton’s Cave. Easily combined with Harrogate for a full day in the area.
